In some ways, issues of originality, appropriation and context have always played a role in determining how art is perceived. During the 20th century and into the 21st century, these facets of art-making and exhibition have been perhaps more important than ever before and have shaped many of the major movements and works in the Modern and Post Modern canons. For some, appropriation and context were cornerstones of the works while others maintained that the greatest works of art reflect pure originality and creativity. It is tempting to assume that each has been worked out sufficiently and that there exists a consensus regarding the lines that each issue draws. Still, questions of these borders or barriers remain - when, if ever, was originality exhausted? Is all art mimetic in the sense that everything is borrowed from somewhere or something other? Can contextual shifts in art-making or exhibition make an appropriated image or idea new again?
